Financial education in Uzbekistan

 

This page provides an overview of financial literacy in Uzbekistan and access to information relating to the country's financial education activities. Uzbekistan participated in Phase II of the Technical Assistance Project on Financial Education in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), Eurasia which ran (phase I and Phase II) from 2017-2022.

Financial literacy in Uzbekistan

Uzbekistan started implement financial education initiatives in recent years. In 2020, Uzbekistan launched the process of the development of National Financial Inclusion Strategy (NFIS) as a multi-stakeholder effort led by the Central Bank of Uzbekistan (CBU) with technical assistance from the World Bank Group (WBG). Financial education is one of the pillars of the National Financial Inclusion Strategy. A range of stakeholders from public sector, including the Ministry of education and science, the private sector, civil society and NGOs are involved in the work.

A roadmap on developing and implementing financial education initiatives in Uzbekistan will be developed and approved under the financial education pillar of NFIS.

Uzbekistan's participation in the project

The OECD-INFE Technical Assistance Project on Financial Education in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) ran from 2017-2022. It provided tailored guidance and technical support for the design, implementation and review of evidence-based financial education strategies and policies in CIS economies. This project covered seven countries: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. The project benefited from the financial support of the Ministry of Finance of the Russian Federation.

Uzbekistan participated actively in the second phase of the project. The country contributed to the follow-up survey on the levels of financial literacy in 2021.

The OECD provided technical assistance to the CBU for the development of the financial education Roadmap of the NFIS in Uzbekistan, as well as organisation of peer learning activities.

Additionally, experts from Central Bank of Uzbekistan and other institutions were actively taking part in the events and conferences organised in the framework of the TA assistance project.
