Good access to high-quality and sustainable infrastructure is an essential determinant of people’s well-being and a basic requirement for businesses to prosper. High-quality and sustainable infrastructure – ranging from health, digital, transport, energy and water sectors to public parks and recreational centres – underpins inclusive growth and supports sustainable development in line with the 2030 Agenda. The development of quality and sustainable infrastructure is also at the core of the Ise-Shima Principles for Promoting Quality Infrastructure Investment and the G20’s work on infrastructure financing.

• Apply a gender lens in infrastructure projects by putting in place systems that ensure a systematic collection of relevant gender disaggregated data on access to and use of infrastructure by its type – such as transportation, energy, water and sanitation, digital, safety and resilience, financial, health, education, culture, green spaces, etc.) to inform infrastructure project planning and design.

• Develop frameworks for infrastructure design that take into account interlinkages between infrastructure and women’s and men’s wellbeing as well as societal goals regarding environmental protection and spatial planning.

• Use government tools such as gender-smart procurement and gender budgeting to enable gender-sensitive infrastructure projects.

• Address the gender sensitive governance deficit in decision-making and throughout the value chain of infrastructure projects.

• Ensure responsible business conduct within and across borders, respecting basic human rights, promoting equal labour rights between men and women, improving working conditions for women and avoiding negative environmental externalities, both within companies and along their supply chains.
