Life expectancy dropped by 1.5 years in 2020, but Spain now has the third highest rate of COVID-19 vaccination across OECD countries. Health at a Glance 2021 provides the latest comparable data and trends on the performance of health systems in OECD countries and key emerging economies. Alongside indicator-by-indicator analysis, this edition offers a special chapter on the health impact of COVID-19.
In some countries, employers used job retention programmes to cut hours while allowing workers to keep their pay and jobs; there, it is likely that the full impact of the pandemic is yet to be felt. In other countries, there have been unprecedented increases in unemployment, but many workers will return to their jobs (or to new ones) as economies re-open and activity picks up.

Spain has one of the highest levels of alcohol consumption – 12.7 litres of pure alcohol per capita per year, roughly equivalent to 2.6 bottles of wine or 4.9 litres of beer per week per person aged 15 and over. In addition, in Spain, some population groups are at higher risk than others.

In Spain, to protect workers from COVID-19 and help them with family care needs, the authorities promoted a rapid move to telework by expediting programmes to support the digitalisation of small-medium enterprises. In addition, several sectoral agreements were signed to better protect workers in supermarkets, health care, hotels, restaurants and the tourism sector.
