    The future of tourism in natural areas: Impact, governance, financing

    The theme of the Future of Tourism in Natural Areas project (Tour.Nat) was tourism management in natural and protected areas at the time of Covid-19. The project intended to build an agile living laboratory of practical seminars, individual research, working groups, creative sessions, interactive discussions, and online tutoring.

    Coronavirus (COVID-19) and cultural and creative sectors: impact, innovations and planning for post-crisis

    Along with the tourism industry, cultural and creative sectors are among the most affected by the current coronavirus (Covid-19) crisis. The OECD joined forces with its partners to collaboratively provide a rapid assessment of the impacts and to start defining the policy responses needed from local and national governments to alleviate the short and long-term effects of the crisis on the cultural and creative sectors.

    Working Together for Local Integration of Migrants and Refugees in Rome

    This report focuses on the local level integration of migrants in Rome, and provides information on the national framework for integration in Italy. While the study assumes that local authorities are at the forefront of migrant integration – providing information and essential services, ensuring access to education and the labour market, overcoming the barriers for full inclusion in the host society, and managing conflicts – local authorities are not alone. This report stresses the importance of multi-level governance of migrant integration, highlighting the key role of third sector enterprises, NGOs, business, faith-based organisations and unions. It identifies and shares selected local actions and governance practices to manage the short- and long-term effects of migration flows, and provides an international comparative of practices implemented by other EU cities, highlighting the most effective measures and lessons learned.

    OECD Territorial Reviews: Bergamo, Italy

    This follow-up to the 2001 OECD Territorial Review of Bergamo monitors progress over the past 15 years and reassesses the main development challenges the region faces. Globalisation has intensified international competition in Bergamo’s traditional manufacturing sector, and the global financial crisis has exacerbated some of the structural weaknesses of Bergamo’s traditional industrial sectors. The region needs to upgrade production processes to generate more added value in economic activities to remain competitive. The review offers recommendations to help Bergamo transition to higher value-added and more technologically intensive activities. In particular, it calls for: a development plan supported by all local actors; a strategy for improving the skills of the adult population through education and training programmes; stimulating innovation systems; attracting foreign direct investment; and, finally, strategies for boosting the competitiveness of small and medium-sized enterprises.

    Le tourisme et l'économie créative

    Alors que l'importance de l'économie créative continue de croître, de fortes synergies entre le tourisme et les industries créatives émergent offrant ainsi un potentiel considérable pour amplifier la demande touristique et développer de nouveaux produits, expériences et marchés. Ces nouveaux liens entrainent le passage d’un modèle classique de tourisme culturel vers de nouveaux modèles de tourisme créatif basés sur la culture immatérielle et la création contemporaine. Ce rapport fait des proposition pour l'élaboration de politiques efficaces dans ce domaine, en s’appuyant sur la relation de plus en plus forte entre tourisme et secteurs créatifs. A partir d’études de cas récentes, il étudie également comment renforcer et valoriser ces liens pour générer davantage de valeur ajoutée. Des politiques actives sont nécessaires pour que les pays, les régions et les villes bénéficient au maximum des synergies entre tourisme et créativité. Les principales questions politiques sont analysées.

    OECD Territorial Reviews: Venice, Italy 2010

    This Review of Venice, Italy, offers a comprehensive assessment of the city-region’s economy and the extent to which its land use, labour market and environmental policies embrace a metropolitan vision. A new understanding of the provinces of Padua, Treviso and Venice as an interconnected city-region of 2.6 million people guides this study. Venice ranks as among the most dynamic and productive city-regions in the OECD, with high employment levels and growth rates. Though it has thrived on a model of small firms and industrial clusters, it is undergoing a deep economic transformation. Venice confronts growing environmental challenges as a result of rising traffic congestion and costly infrastructure pressures, exacerbated by sprawl. Demographics are also changing, due to ageing inhabitants, immigrant settlement and the rapid depopulation of the historic city of Venice.   This report offers a comparative analysis of these issues, utilising the OECD’s metropolitan database to benchmark productivity and growth. It draws on regional economics, urban planning, transportation studies and hydrology to throw light on the changes within the city-region. In light of planned inter-city rail extensions, the Review calls for programmes to increase economic synergies between Venice and its neighbours. It evaluates key tools for promoting economic growth and metropolitan governance and proposes enhanced co-ordination of land use policies, additional business development services for small and medium-sized businesses, and the enlargement of university-linked innovation. Given frequent flooding, the report appraises the quality of metropolitan water governance and Venice’s potential to become a powerful reference for climate change adaptation.
