The green transition: What role for regional public employment services?

 12 May 2023   09.15-13.00 CEST Trento, Italy

The workshop was organised by the OECD Trento Centre for Local Development in collaboration with the Autonomous Region Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol, Italy

The context

As the world faces a growing urgency to address the climate crisis, the green transition has become an essential focus for many communities, organisations and industries. However, the transition to a sustainable, low-carbon economy requires a workforce with specific skills and competencies. This is where public employment services and labour agencies play a critical role in supporting individuals and businesses to make the transition. Public employment services and labour agencies are uniquely positioned to identify the skills needed for a green economy. They also facilitate the matching of skilled workers with employers who require those skills. Furthermore they facilitate access to training and education to ensure that individuals are equipped with the necessary competencies to thrive in a greener economy.

The workshop

The workshop showcased the new OECD publication "Job Creation and Local Economic Development: Bridging the Great Green Divide", and brought together representatives from national and regional employment service providers as well as other practitioners in the field of labour policies from across the OECD.

The goal was to facilitate a dynamic discussion on how public employment services can play a crucial role in navigating, promoting, and maximising the benefits of a sustainable green transition in local labour markets. The focus was on creating quality jobs and minimising negative impacts on workers and communities.

The event, in-person, was open to civil society and all those interested in the topic upon free registration.
