Italy: Trentino Spatial Productivity Review

This three-year project, led by the Spatial Productivity Lab at the OECD Trento Centre for Local Development, aims to carry out analysis on the productivity of the Autonomous Province of Trento in Italy, propose policy measures, offer discussion opportunities among stakeholders and produce an annual report on productivity and competitiveness of the Trentino economy.

The reports will be based on analysis and research from the Scientific partners and input from local stakeholders.

Implementation period: 2023-2025

What's the issue?

The productivity and competitiveness of a region is the main indicator for the long-term prosperity of its residents. Local productivity is strongly and positively correlated with economic and non-economic indicators of workers, firms and society overall. On the economic side, higher regional productivity is related to higher real wages for workers, higher disposable income of households, and lower income inequality between households. High regional productivity may also strengthen the resilience of local economies to economic shocks and disruption, such as from economic recessions or local sectoral shocks. Regional productivity is also related to the general well-being of residents, such as employment participation rates, educational attainment, the quality of the natural environment, and life expectancy.

The Autonomous Province of Trento (Italy) has established a Provincial Coordination for Productivity and Competitiveness through legislation to:

Carry out analysis on the productivity of the province.
Propose policy measures based on this analysis.
Organise discussions among stakeholders and in public.
Produce an annual report on productivity and competitiveness of the Trentino economy.

What does the OECD offer?

The Spatial Productivity Lab at the OECD Trento Centre for Local Development will coordinate the Trentino Spatial Productivity Review and liaise with Scientific partners and local stakeholders for the duration of the project. The three-year project will deliver a report in each year based on new analysis and relevant themes. The reports will be based on analysis and research from the scientific partners and input from local stakeholders.
