The OECD Spatial Productivity Lab (SPL)
The OECD Spatial Productivity Lab (SPL) is a dedicated research laboratory that works with local and global partners to advance knowledge about the ways regional policy and a better understanding of spatial links can improve productivity growth and thereby the creation of better jobs and well-being.
The OECD Spatial Productivity Lab is a part of the OECD Trento Centre for Local Development, which is an integral part of the OECD Centre for Entrepreneurship, SMEs, Regions and Cities. The mission of the Trento Centre is to build capacities for local development in OECD member and non-member countries, working directly with policy makers at all levels of government.
Focus of this meeting
Macroeconomic trends in Italy and in Trentino
In recent years, a number of papers documented some relevant macroeconomic trends, such as changes in factor shares, labor force participation, investment and labor reallocation, in several advanced countries. Research that addresses this topic in the Italian context is still relatively scant, although growing. This presentation offers a tentative overview of various recent macroeconomic trends for Italy and, when data are available, the four Italian macro-regions and the Province of Trento.
Recent economic trends in the Provinces of Trento and Bolzano
The main findings of the Bank of Italy publication L’economia delle Province autonome di Trento e di Bolzano – Aggiornamento congiunturale will be presented. In the first part of 2019, the economy of Trentino has slowed down due to a moderate growth of exports and an environment of persistent global uncertainties, which continue to weight on the manufacturing sector and are dampening investment growth. At the same time, the services and construction sectors remain resilient, despite some moderation in touristic flows. Credit market dynamics are weakening due to slower demand for new credit. Labor market conditions remain strong.
The knowledge-intensive industries in the Province of Trento: The 2012-2016 spatial profile
The R&D-intensive (RDI) industries are crucial for the sustained growth prospects, competitiveness and economic resilience in the modern world. This presentation offers a dynamic snapshot of the RDI sector in the Province of Trento over 2012-2016. It is juxtaposed with the overall economy of the province with the special focus on the size and concentration, wages, engagements in international trade, productivity and the prevalence of artisan businesses. The geographical distribution and the evolution over time is highlighted.
