Trento, Italy, 3-6 June 2010

The Autonomous Province of Trento, in collaboration with the University of Trento, the financial newspaper Il sole 24 Ore, and the publisher Laterza, has, over the past five years, organised the Festival of Economics which has become a very important international event. The Festival is a stimulating and interesting 4-day initiative, which involves international speakers and a wide range of participants from across the world and of every age. Past editions have seen the participation of various Nobel prizes winners and other prominent speakers and politicians.

The OECD LEED Trento Centre, in cooperation with the School on Local Development of the University of Trento, organised a round-table session on:

1989-2010 two decades of transformations in the new Europe:
development choices and trajectories

Friday 4 June at 3 p.m.

The round table focused on the various questions raising from the recent international financial crisis about the development model that was introduced into central-east Europe after 1989, particularly concerning the vulnerability of these economies to external shocks and their capacity to react. The session examined the cases of Hungary and Poland.

The round-table speakers were:

  • Sergio Arzeni: Director of the Centre for entrepreneurship, SMEs and local development of the OECD
  • Bruno Dallago: Dean of the Faculty of Sociology and Director of the School for Local Development at the University of Trento.
  • Karoly Attila Soos: Senior research fellow of the Institute of Economics of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. He has been Member of Parliament for seven years (and also Secretary of State in 1994-1996), and worked for three years at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.
  • Grzegorz W. Kolokdo: Director of TIGER (Transformation, Integration and Globalization Economic Research) and Professor at the Leon Kozminski Academy of Entrepreneurship and Management in Warsaw (WSPiZ). From 1994 to 1997, he was Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance.
