    Youth inclusion - Agenda Viet Nam workshop

    This is the agenda of the Youth inclusion final workshop in Viet Nam. Ms Naoko Ueda presented the Youth Well-being Policy Review of Viet Nam in a high-level event organised on 22 November, in collaboration with the MOHA and Germany’s Hanns Seidel Foundation.

    To make Viet Nam’s economic boom more inclusive, invest more in the disadvantaged and rural youth, says new report

    Economic and political reforms (Doi Moi), initiated in the mid-1980s, have transformed Viet Nam into one of the world’s fastest-growing economies. However, growth has produced fewer benefits for the poorest. The country also has yet to improve the well-being of a sizeable share of youth, especially those disadvantaged and in rural areas.

    A Decade of Social Protection Development in Selected Asian Countries

    Over the past ten years economic growth in Asia has contributed to a reduction of poverty as well as fertility rates, and greater prosperity has contributed to gains in life expectancy. However, at present many workers still work in informal employment, frequently for long hours at little pay and without social protection coverage. A growing demand for social support, extending the coverage of social protection benefits and improving the job quality of workers will be among Asia’s major challenges in future. This report considers these challenges, providing policy examples from countries to illustrate good practice, including Bangladesh, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Pakistan, Singapore and Viet Nam.

    Green Growth in Hai Phong, Viet Nam

    This report examines the green growth potential and identifies best practices for policy and governance as well as ways to strengthen current practices. As the third largest city in Vietnam, Hai Phong’s economy is growing remarkably at an average rate of 8.7% (2015) in tandem with the growth of the Hai Phong Port. Economic growth and urbanisation, however, have posed serious environmental challenges, including: increased greenhouse gas emissions from industry and transport; rapid depletion of underground water sources; pollution of water sources from untreated commercial, medical, domestic and agricultural waste water; and inefficient waste management, where less than 10% of domestic waste is composted and recyclable materials are mixed with other waste and landfilled. Furthermore, Hai Phong ranks among the 20 cities most vulnerable to costal flooding due to climate change. Nevertheless, there is much untapped potential for green growth in Viet Nam and Hai Phong city. The ultimate goal is to build a stronger, more resilient and greener city.

    Agricultural Policies in Viet Nam 2015

    This review, undertaken in close co-operation with the Vietnamese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, assesses the performance of Vietnamese agriculture over the last two decades, evaluates Vietnamese agricultural policy reforms, discusses the policy framework for sustainable investment in agriculture and provides recommendations to address key challenges in the future. The OECD Food and Agricultural Reviews provide comprehensive assessments, according to different angles, of countries’ agricultural policies, including OECD estimates of the level of support; major reform efforts and their potential impacts; or conduciveness of the broad policy framework to generating the innovation that will improve agricultural productivity sustainably.
